Endangered Places listing sought in response to I-70 expansion plans

By Cynthia Neely

The Board of Directors of Historic Georgetown, Inc., has joined with the Town of Georgetown and other governmental agencies and historical societies in Clear Creek County in nominating the Clear Creek valley to the Colorado Preservation, Inc. (CPI) Endangered Places listing for 2005. The other agencies include Clear Creek County, the City of Idaho Springs, the Historical Society of Idaho Springs, Mill Creek Valley Historical Society, and the Town of Silver Plume.

The basis for the nomination is the threat of expansion of Interstate 70. Such expansion could result in increased noise and have a negative visual impact to our historic resources.

The selected list of Endangered Places will be announced at CPI's Annual Conference on February 3. The applicants hope the Clear Creek valley is chosen for the list in order to publicize the potential harm to our resources and to enlist the support of Colorado preservationists in pursuing a solution that will minimize harm to our valley.

HGI encourages all members to check the website at www.170mtncorridor.com to comment directly to the Colorado Department of Transportation regarding the threat that a six-to-eight lane expansion would pose to the Georgetown-Silver Plume National Historic Landmark District.
