By Sharon Rossino Dana Abrahamson, Executive Director of Historic Georgetown, Inc., and Clear Creak County resident, has been appointed to the Colorado Scenic and Historic Byways Commission. Dana will serve as liaison between the commission and the Colorado Tourism Board, of which she is also a member. Many Clear Creek County residents are probably aware that our county has two designations in the Colorado Scenic and Historic Byways program: Guanella Pass and Mount Evans. But do they realize the importance of these designations to the community or how these designations occur? Only twenty-three Scenic and Historic Byways exist in Colorado; therefore, it seems quite extraordinary that Clear Creek County has two of these designations. These designations have a positive impact on Clear Creek County and provide benefits to the community in various ways. For example, locals and visitors alike enjoy the awe-inspiring scenery and outdoor opportunities, which provide unprecedented recreational benefits to all who trek up the byways.

Local partnership groups nominate a route for designation as a Colorado Scenic and Historic Byway, and the Colorado Scenic and Historic Byways Commission decides whether or not to designate the site as such. The commission works with state agencies to help develop byway management plans, including the protection, interpretation, and promotion of notable byway characteristics. The commission also coordinates the distribution of funds for byway improvement. Thus having a Clear Creek County resident on the commission could be quite beneficial to the county.
