A New Year and a New Day
We open our Center to make visitors of travelers

By Ronald Neely
At last, at long last! The new Gateway Visitor Center is now open to the public. At 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31st, 2003, the Building Inspector of the Town of Georgetown issued a Certificate of Occupancy, and we opened the doors of our new facility to the traveling and visiting public.

Open, but, alas, far, far from complete. As I write, work is continuing on many facets of our new endeavor: Furniture is being made for us in Idaho Springs (we¹re using card tables at the moment); photo murals are being produced in Georgetown; computer terminals are being assembled in Denver; a film is being produced in Denver and Estes Park; interior and exterior signage is being made in Denver; telephone people are darting about (voice mail still doesn't work); we¹re getting ready for an open house "sneak peek" this Friday evening; electricians and plumbers still have work to do; people are asking for directions; the budget is tight; it's January; gravel is being placed on the parking lot; we can¹t find this, we can¹t find that; our offices are in the basement; Mrs. McGillicuddy has just lost her dog; a few merchants are complaining because we don¹t send enough business into downtown Georgetown; we aren¹t getting enough business at our new facility (yet) to send anyone; and our computers are not up to speed. Whew! But, the staff and volunteers are in tears of joy because we have heat. Yes, we have heat! Ergo, we are happy and our visitors are happy, because it is colder than blue blazes outside.

We keep reminding ourselves that this is all part of moving into a new building. So we are "keeping the faith," knowing that we will, in time, be successful in our mission to bring relief to I-70 travelers and a sense of direction and context to visitors, and to convert as many as possible of the former to the latter.

OPEN FOR BUSINESS: A group of shuttle drivers enjoy the new facility; Jason Snook prepares to greet visitors; the antique clock from Silver Plume perches above the coffee urn.

We anticipate that our January 2004 attendance will be slightly greater than that of January 2003, when we were in the old service station. Business at our new facility is expected to improve further as we complete some of our projects over the next several months, and especially after CDOT uncovers the signs on I-70 that say "Rest Area."

We are getting through all this stuff OK, thanks to a dedicated corps of volunteers, a capable staff and, most importantly, understanding visitors. They love our new building and so do we! Please pop by and say hello or volunteer (we need the help). With any luck, and if "the creek don't rise" too much, we should have our parking lot paved and the landscaping completed in time for our dedication ceremony this July. See you then!
