Hamill Park planting set for summer, 2004

by Dana Abrahamson

Construction has begun, and fund raising continues on Hamill Park, the small park that will be located on the HGI property behind the Hamill Carriage House and Hamill Office Building. The park will be open to the public and will also be available by reservation for small weddings, receptions, and other events.

Hamill Park will have a donor wall, a donor brick path, small areas to sit and relax, birdbaths, and several gardens, including a Colorado Garden, a Welcome Garden, and a Shade Garden. Work is continuing at a slow pace this winter, but hard-scaping is to be completed this spring and plantings this summer. Donations in memory of Chris Hestekin in the amount of $2,410 to date, will be used for a small garden with a bench within the Park. Chris' wife, Patti, will help us determine how best to honor his memory.

Silver Plume granite is being donated by Fabyan Watrous of Idaho Springs for the donor wall and some of the park elements. The granite will match that of the Hamill House wall. Some park elements are still available for "purchase," including benches, bricks, a pergola, a fountain, bird baths, and others.

Items may be purchased in memory of a friend or loved one, or to commemorate a special date or anniversary, or just to support HGI in this effort. Please refer to our website at www.historicgeorgetown.org and click on the Hamill Park update icon at the bottom of the page. You will be directed to a detailed budget page and a listing of those items still available for purchase. Please check it even if you have already made a pledge, to make sure that we have it recorded and that we have the correct spelling.

Commemorative bricks for the donor walk are available for $125 each. They are full size at 8x4x2 inches. The wording is engraved into the bricks, then filled with exterior-rated epoxy grout, which will be colored a deep green or black. According to the manufacturer, under normal wear and tear, the bricks will last "indefinitely." Suffice it to say that the bricks will last a long, long time.
