Open Lands Committee to survey, protect title and donor's wishes of HGI properties |
|
The conservation of natural resources
of the Georgetown/Silver Plume National Historic Landmark District and
environs is as important as the preservation of its cultural assets.
With over 1,000 acres of open lands that have been donated over the
past thirty years, HGI is engaged in the development of trails and the
protection of open lands and mining heritage.
Historic Georgetown, Inc. is in the process of organizing a committee to advise the HGI Board of Directors regarding use of its open lands. HGI owned open space may be found in many areas including Silverdale, Saxon Mountain, and Georgetown proper. The Board has assigned the open lands committee a number of tasks. The committee will conduct surveys as needed to assess exact open space boundaries and take whatever steps may be required to assure that title to any given area of open space is not in question. |
The open lands committee will also explore alternatives and make recommendations to the Board as to how Historic Georgetown should best use its open lands, and how HGI owned open lands should be used in conjunction with other land in the Georgetown/Silver Plume National Historic District. Recently, Walt Borneman presented a wonderful lecture
and slide show for the Devil's Gate History Club regarding the life and
legacy of Historic Georgetown benefactor Walter Berry. Some of our newer
members learned about the gift of Saxon Mountain acreage to Historic Georgetown,
Inc., and Mr. Berry's desire that the land on Saxon Mountain remain open
to be used by and for the benefit of the public. The open lands committee
will advise the HGI Board of New Board member Matt Skeen has been appointed chairman
of the committee. Anyone wishing to serve on the open lands committee
or to otherwise work with the committee should contact Matt Skeen at his
office in Georgetown at (303) 569-3134. |
