HGI, Montessori school form unique partnership

By Dana Abrahamson,
Executive Director

Historic Georgetown, Inc. and Clear Creek Montessori School formed a unique partnership this past summer by working together to preserve, and then occupy, the historic Kneisel House. Located on Biddle Street, Georgetown, this wonderful turn-of the century house was built well over 100 years ago by Mr. Henry Anderson, of the Kneisel and Anderson Grocery Store, still located today on 6th Street, Georgetown.

HGI purchased the property from the Kneisel and Anderson families in 1997, as part of the HGI five-part plan for preservation in the Georgetown area. It will one day be showcased as a museum, demonstrating the home of a prominent local merchant. Until that time, however, Clear Creek Montessori School will be housed in this wonderful, newly renovated building. In exchange for spearheading the renovation and acquiring all materials and labor to complete the building upgrades, Clear Creek Montessori will be occupying the HGI owned property for the next four years rent-free.

Some of the generous volunteers and donors responsible for completing the renovation of the Kneisel House include:

  • Golden Home Depot donated approximately $9,000 in materials
  • Electrician Ron Lynch of Columbia Electric in Idaho Springs donated his time to rewire the entire building
  • Blaine McNeil donated his time to install all new plumbing and central heat
  • EDS Waste Systems donated a roll-off during renovation of the building
  • Trailhead Wilderness School kids and counselors donated many hours of hard work
  • Long/Hoeft Architects of Georgetown advised during renovation on behalf of Historic Georgetown, Inc.
  • North Denver WinAir donated a new Heil furnace

The school was in great need of a new and larger location in its second year of operation, and Historic Georgetown benefits from the major improvements made to the property, as well as having a full time caretaker for this precious Georgetown landmark.

Clear Creek Montessori School

Clear Creek Montessori School creates a unique, experiential environment of learning, giving children the freedom to make some of their own decisions throughout the day in a controlled environment. The Montessori method enables teachers to meet the individual needs of each child. Music, art, foreign language, and physical education are all part of the school's curriculum. Some of the skills learned by pre-school children each day include practical life, sensorial, language, math, and science and geography.

The school's Montessori trained teachers are experts in their field and parents of Clear Creek Montessori children have been thrilled by the progress made by their children.

School hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., five days a week, with pre-school hours from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Extended child-care hours are available before and after class times. Tuition is paid monthly and varies by program. Clear Creek Montessori has an "open-door" policy and parental involvement is encouraged. Parents can get involved in a number of ways including participation in the Clear Creek Montessori Parent Board, helping with Family Fun Days, special classroom celebrations, volunteering to read or teach a unit in their area of expertise. For enrollment or other information, please call Clear Creek Montessori School at (303) 569-0101.
