History marches on, and so does
the Devil's Gate History Club

By Bill Wilson

The Devil's Gate History Club is pleased to announce its program for the 2006-07 season. The year kicks off on September 15 with a presentation by Doug Rhoades, titled "Labels, Leadville, and Lore." Mr. Rhoades is the author of a book by the same name, which describes his discovery in Leadville of tin cans with rare, intact, colorful labels dating from 1876 or earlier. A native of Colorado and former resident of Leadville, Mr. Rhoades now resides in Snohomish, Washington.

On October 20, Nick Ulmer will discuss the "History of Green Lake," now a private lake, along South Clear Creek. The lake had Colorado's first fish hatchery and was later a popular recreation site.

Buff Rutherford and Chris Bradley will present "Early Recreation in Georgetown" on November 17. This is a rescheduling of their talk that had to be cancelled last season.

On January 19, Frank Young will describe the "History of Open Space in Clear Creek County." (Be prepared for a long talk, for the history goes back thousands of years!)

On February 16, we repeat a popular feature from last year: "Digging up Clear Creek County's Relics." This is an open house, in which locals are encouraged to bring for display their 19th- and early 20th-century treasures from Clear Creek County.

Author and historian Walt Borneman will be our guest speaker on March 16, when he will present a slide program titled "Colorado's 'Fourteeners,' with Special Focus on Those in Clear Creek County." Walt is the recent author of a beautiful coffee-table book, "14,000 Feet: A Celebration of Colorado's Highest Mountains."

The formal program concludes on April 20, when Kathy Hoeft and Gary Long, local architects, offer "The Landscaping of 19th-Century Georgetown."

We close each year with a field trip to a nearby site of historic interest. Watch for an announcement of the location of next year's trip, which will be held on May 18.

Presentations of the Devil's Gate History Club are a public service sponsored by Historic Georgetown, Inc. The talks are free and open to the public. They are held on the third Friday of each month (except December) starting at 7:00 p.m.; unless otherwise announced, the venue is the Georgetown Community Center.
