Hamill lawn restoration
nears completion

by Deirdre Baldwin

The removal of the sod and the stabilization of the fountain marked the first stages of the Hamill lawn restoration project.

The Hamill Lawn Restoration project is well under way. You might have noticed that the yard at the Hamill House has no grass. The sod survives in various locations around town, including the yard of the Mahany Building.

Last summer HGI was awarded a grant of $100,000 from the State Historical Fund for the restoration project. In addition, the National Park Service through its Challenge, Cost, Share program has awarded HGI $30,000. And the Town of Georgetown is contributing nine trees that will replace the four trees along Third Street which have been removed.

The fountain was temporarily removed in June and has been restored. The ground has been graded to remove over a century¹s buildup of sod and soil. New sidewalks along the south side of the house have been poured. The irrigation system, sod, trees, and outside lighting will be the next part of the project.

We hope that all work will be completed in time for our William Arthur Hamill¹s birthday celebration and the Hamill Park ground-breaking on August 24.
