Bronze plaques planned for Georgetown's historic buildings

By Bill Wilson

Over the years, a few bronze plaques have been placed in Georgetown to identify local landmark buildings and sites. Now, as a follow-up to the recent publication of a walking-tour guide, HGI and the Town of Georgetown are collaborating on a more comprehensive project to install plaques on many of Georgetown's historic commercial and civic buildings. This effort is a part of the town's Wayfinding Plan, which will place three large directional signs and 13 destination signs at key locations throughout town. These signs will replace the existing variety of directional signs. The Plan was completed with the assistance of the Colorado Community Development Center of the University of Colorado at Denver.

The historical plaques would enhance the interest and understanding of residents and visitors alike concerning the historical context of our buildings, and would encourage visitors to linger in our downtown area. In the initial phase of the plaque project, HGI will emplace about 33 bronze markers on buildings in and around downtown.

Each 12x18-inch plaque will show the name of the building, the date of construction, and a brief description of the building's history. Each plaque will also include "Georgetown-Silver Plume National Historic Landmark District" and "Town of Georgetown & Historic Georgetown, Inc." Bill Wilson and Cynthia Neely are overseeing the project.

Funding for the entire Wayfinding Plan is expected from several sources. As a newly-designated Preserve America Community, the town is applying for a grant, and matching funds will be sought from a combination of town funds and contributions from property owners and other interested parties. Before ordering the plaques, HGI will contact each property owner for permission to emplace the plaque and for concurrence on its contents and placement location.
