PROUDLY ACCEPT: Ron Neely, left, President of Historic Georgetown, Inc., and Matt Skeen, right, Chairman of the Board of Directors, accept the award from Georgianna Contiguglia, State Historic Preservation Officer and president of the Colorado Historical Society.

On Thursday, February 6, representatives from Historic Georgetown, Inc., accepted the Steven H. Hart Award in recognition of the Mahany Building project. Before and after slides of the Mahany Building, also known as BOB, the Burnt Out Building, drew gasps from the audience of preservationists.

The awards were presented at the opening reception of the 2003 Saving Places conference, sponsored by Colorado Preservation, Inc.

Recipients of the annual Steven H. Hart Awards are selected by the Board of Directors of the Colorado Historical Society. The award is named after the state's first Historic Preservation Officer, Steven H. Hart. This year, eight awards were given. The honor is especially meaningful, as only CHS Board members and staff may nominate the projects or individuals. HGI was in good company. Other award recipients included the Denver Public Library's Western History/Genealogy Department, for its photodigitization project, and Clarion Associates for its publication, The Economic Benefits of Historic Preservation in Colorado.

Long-Hoeft Architects were the architects of the Mahany Building project, and Silver Plume Home Services completed the construction work. The undertaking transformed a derelict building from a decades old eyesore into a sparkling historic treasure. The refurbished interior contains two low-income housing units and one commercial space.
