Georgetown book
honors Leyendecker

in memory of
Dr. Liston E. Leyendecker

Historic Georgetown, Inc. is pleased to announce that a history of Georgetown between the years 1859 and 1896 is being written by Duane A. Smith, professor of history at Fort Lewis College in Durango, and Christine A. Bradley, Clear Creek County Archivist. Research materials from the collection of the late Dr. Liston E. Leyendecker were used in the writing of the manuscript, along with one chapter, "Georgetown, 1878," which comes from a Devil's Gate History Club presentation made by Dr. Leyendecker in 1996.

Both co-authors considered Liston a treasured friend. Duane and Liston shared a lifelong love of mining and western history; Christine studied with Liston at CSU, continuing their friendship into later years when he would come to the Archives to research, sharing talks of history over many pleasant hours.

The first draft of the publication has been submitted to the acquisitions editor at University of Colorado Press, and is awaiting final approval for publication. The book is expected to be about 250 pages of text with photographs, maps and illustrations throughout, plus three photo essays that will be printed on photo-quality paper.

The book will be dedicated to Dr. Leyendecker, our longtime friend and supporter, as well as former board member of HGI, who will also be listed as a co-author, posthumously. Those who knew Liston may be aware that he had intended to write the history of Georgetown after his retirement from teaching history at Colorado State University. After his death in May of 2001, Historic Georgetown, Inc. approached both Christine Bradley and Duane Smith about the continuation of his work towards publishing this definitive history of 19th Century Georgetown. Both enthusiastically agreed and volunteered their time under two conditions: that Liston be listed as co-author and that the book be dedicated to his memory.
