Over the last 30 years, HGI has been involved in many aspects of children's education. The goal of our student activities is not only to include Georgetown as an important part of the Colorado History curriculum, but to hopefully inspire grade school children to become active preservationists as adults.

The student guide program was developed by Life Charter Member Cindy Neely in the late 1970's and was a tool for helping children become familiar with the history of Georgetown. Since then, HGI has developed a connection with schools through out the area including Denver, that annually include a trip to Georgetown as part of their history studies. In addition, HGI has created a variety of events and workshops specifically for students at the Georgetown Elementary School.

Recently, children in the 4th, 5th and 6th grades helped with the 1999 House Tour by selling lemonade to visitors. The students who participated in this event have been given student memberships in HGI as special recognition for volunteering their time.

Children's workshops in making Victorian Christmas ornaments, led by Darby O'Rourke and HGI Board Secretary Pauline Marshall, have yielded the many handmade ornaments that adorn the children's Christmas tree at the Hamill House.

For the last two years Pauline, who is also a music teacher, held a Christmas Carol student recital at the Hamill House for parents and friends. The square grand piano in the parlor along with the historic furnishings created a feeling of being transported back to a time when Mrs. Hamill might have entertained her guests during the holiday season.

Continued efforts to integrate the history of Georgetown into Georgetown Elementary School's Colorado History program will focus on a number of special activities and events held throughout the year to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Historic Georgetown, Inc.
