Historic Georgetown, Inc., purchased the old Centennial Mill on April 15, 2004. Since that time, the debris from within the mill has been cleared out, the dilapidated roof has been removed, the property has been surveyed, environmental and engineering analyses have been completed, and the necessary materials have been ordered to stabilize the mill. Silver Plume Home Services, the contractor hired to stabilize the mill, has now begun the process of structural reinforcement. Currently, the contractor is rebuilding the rear roof and installing
fourteen vertical steel beams that will bear the weight of the roof. Along
the inside perimeter, the building will be attached to vertical beams.
The plan is to rebuild the new roof over the main part of the building
and to complete stabilization by the middle of November. The contractors
will then rehabilitate the exterior of the building, which includes the
reattachment of salvageable pieces of the original siding. This will complete
the first phase of the project. |
The additional work needed will be determined over the next few years, based on a series of community meetings that will be held to examine possible uses, zoning issues, and future budgets. Even before this additional work is completed, we will have preserved one of Georgetown's most important reminders of its mining history. In the meantime, HGI still needs to raise 4 percent of its budget of $307,945, which amounts to $13,799, to complete this first phase of the project. We are grateful to donors who have already helped us to raise $293,846 toward the rehabilitation of the mill. Funds to date have come from neighbors and friends, the Colorado Historical Society's State Historical Fund, the National Park Service, and one private foundation. We hope that you, too, can help us fulfill our goal. Donations to the rehabilitation of the mill are 100 percent tax-deductible. Please contact Sharon Rossino, HGI Director of Development, or Dana Abrahamson, HGI Executive Director, if you have any questions or wish to join us in this very important preservation effort. |
