A few drops of rain did not dampen spirits at the William Hamill birthday celebration, held August 24 on the newly restored lawn of the Hamill House. The sod, which had been laid a week before, had survived efforts of local raccoons to flip it over in search of tasty treats. Instead, the tasty treat was birthday cake, one white and one chocolate, enjoyed both by Georgetown residents and pleasantly surprised tourists. After the birthday cake was consumed, celebrants moved west to the site of Hamill Park, where members of the garden committee assisted in the ground-breaking ceremony. Construction has begun on the Victorian garden, and Brownell Street behind the Hamill House is now closed. Members of the garden committee are Coralue Anderson, Christine Bradley, Mary Clark, Pattie Fraley, Karin Gibbs, Betty Hall, Kathy Hoeft, Jane Robertson, Mary Lou Rutherford, Polly Werlin, and Kathie Wilson. Grant Manager is Deirdre Baldwin. Work is proceeding without full funding for the garden, which will be completed in phases. If you wish to donate to the Hamill Park, please contact Historic Georgetown, Inc., at (303)569-2840. |
