10. N.B. Wm B Howland, Denver, has an 1851 letter from Thomas Hamill to his children (addressed to
William Arthur Hamill, et al.) in Philadelphia, c/o Thomas Richardson. See Verbatim transcript in
Addenda.
Howland also has an envelope (only) with the following address for Thomas Hamill:
(in 1853) #11 Tynemouth Street Breek (or Breed) Road Everton, Liverpool
11. Born 1820 per Georgetown Courier, 8 Dec, 1887: "Miss MARY A. HAMILL, sister of Wm. A. Hamill
died in Denver on the 22nd of last month, in the 67th year of her age."
12. From letter, 9 September, 1950 from Lafayette Hanchett to John W. Horner. 3823 Newton, Denver,
Colorado, author of "Silver Town" (Western History Department, Denver Public Library):
"When the Bank of Clear Creek closed its doors in July, 1893, I was appointed Assignee. Charles R.
Fish was the sole owner of the Bank which had a capital of $50,000. Mr. Fish was in his dotage,
and "General" Hamill had so hypnotized him that he owed the Bank, $114,000 unsecured. As assignee,
it was my plain duty to collect or secure this loan which exceeded by more than double, the
Bank's capital. I commenced this action by attaching Hamill's home and furnishings- his granite
quarry; his Middle Park ranches; his toll road over Berthoud Pass, and his big "Watson Ranch"
located at Junction of Clear Creek and Platte River. This action culminated in stripping
Hamill of all his property and as he lost control, his power as a "Boss" dissolved."

This "Watson Ranch" property was purportedly held by William Arthur Hamill and a partner named
(Jesse?) Randall until taken over by the Bank of Clear Creek. From J. M. Copeland's memo book of
1896: "Globeville (6800 N Washington) taken over by Bank Investment Co. about 1895. later split
up." From "The Georgetown Colorado Diaries of Jesse Milton Copeland for 1874 through 1876 and J. M.
Copeland's 1896 inventory of the contents (inventory of 23 April, 1896 to be added later) of
William A. Hamill's ranch house, edited and transcribed by Robert Milton Copeland and Benjamin
Draper, [Fort Collins, Colo.], R. M. Copeland, c1981", Western History Department, Denver Public
Library, C332.1 C79zcop. In 1995 Interstate Highway I-25 runs north from about 52nd Avenue through
the property to Clear Creek at about 68th Avenue.
U.S., Colorado, Jefferson County, (Golden), County Clerk, Warranty Deed, Filed for record 27
January, 1880, (Vol 122:181[?]).
William A. Hamill purchased the following property from Zadock Kalbaugh, Jefferson County,
7 June, 1878 ($300):
"The South West Quarter (¼) of the North West Quarter of Section Twenty-three (23) in Township
Four (4) South of Range Seventy (70) West, containing Forty (40) acres more or less."
This property lies on the West slope of "Dinosaur Ridge National Historic Site, "The Hogback",
west of Denver, straddling Colorado Highway 26, "The Mount Vernon Road" and Mount Vernon Creek
(dry). Visual examination of property east from Colorado 26, 16 November, 1995, revealed no
evidence of habitation. A small "dig", or evidence of minimal mining (tailings) appears high
toward the ridgeline. A small flatter area is in the southwest corner of the property, now (
1995) Jefferson County park land.
13. An Elira Hamill was listed on the 1850 US Census in Philadelphia. This could be Eliza if
she married in America rather than in England as sometimes supposed.
14. Thomas R. Searle was Secretary and Treasurer of the Brown Silver Mining Company of Colorado,
430 Walnut Street, Rm#20, in Philadelphia in 1869.
15. Henry listed as "Henry St. George Hamill" by Agnes Candy, nee O'Kane, "Dodo", par. 11661,
in her letter to Francis B. Howland, 1941. A Thomas St. George married a Miss Acheson, daughter
of Lord Gosford, at Gosford Castle, County Armagh, Tuesday, 13 August, 1776.

receiving 1,115 votes against 976 for JOSEPH VAN DE VOORT, Democrat."
20. William Arthur's great grandfather was a Thomas Richardson, father of Elinor Richardson,
Mother of Thomas Hamill, William's father.
21. There is a family tradition that Hannah Lord Hamill (aka Hannah Pancoast Hamill) was "the
seventh child of the seventh child of the seventh child". There is adequate evidence that
William Arthur Hamill was the seventh child of Thomas Hamill, and that Hannah Lord Hamill
was the seventh child of Hockley THomas Hamill. There is not yet sufficient evidence that
Hockley Thomas Hamill was the seventh child of William Arthur Hamill.

28. The following apparently extracted from a Denver newspaper:
"ACCIDENTLY SHOT
THE SAME OLD STORY TOLD OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
A most distressing accident, which terminated fatally occurred last Friday, when W. A. Hamill,
son of General Hamill of Georgetown was shot and almost instantly killed at his ranch near Hayden,
Routt County. He had been hunting for a mountain lion, failing in finding which he secreted his
gun in the brush and awaited a more favorable opportunity. In recovering his weapon the succeeding
day, he attempted to pick up the weapon without dismounting. The move was disastrous as in some
unaccountable manner the gun was discharged. Young Hamill received the bullet directly in his
brain, and falling from his horse, expired instantly.
Immediate preparations for conveying the body to Denver were made and attended with great
difficulty, and his widow and a party of friends accompanied the remains, being greatly
interrupted by snow drifts. The body arrived here yesterday morning. The funeral will occur
this afternoon at 2 o'clock from General Hamill's ranch in close proximity to the Globe smelter.
Interment will be at Riverside, and carriages will leave the Albany at 1 o'clock and proceed to
the scene of the obsequies.
William Wilbur Hamill (sic) was born in Philadelphia on 6 November, 1861. His death occurred
before he had entered the era of complete manhood. Young Hamill's early life was devoted to
procuring a thorough education. He last attended Swarthmore College at Media, Pa., which he left
to come West, soon after engaging in stock raising in Grand County. But little more than three
years ago he married Miss Hannah Lowe Pancoast (sic) of Woodstown, N. J., who, with two infant
children, survive him."
29. James was supposed to be an officer in either the "Black Watch" or "Coldstream Guards"
egiment. When Hannah Elizabeth Hamill was in London as her father's hostess, circa 1888?9,
she supposedly loved him enough that they wanted to marry in spite of being first cousins.
Her father promptly put an end to the romance by bringing her home to Georgetown.
30. Unable to ascertain lineage, hence, any common ancestry unidentifiable at this writing.
31. Northmore apparently remarried sometime after Priscilla's death according to Helen Harriette
Hamill, nee Mumford, ca. 1975.
32. See Soc Sec death index, 1988: SSN 371?32?3674 (MI).
33. On 17 July, 1994, Thomas Albert Carlson, 117573. told me that while he was working as a
volunteer tour guide at the Hamill House in Georgetown, he learned that Charlotte had married
a HAMITY and was living now in Leadville, Colorado.
34. Res. at birth: 282 South Pearl, Denver.

40. nb: Oct 1986: Mary Katherine Adam Farrand and Patricia Eleanor Adam Lipscomb: The mother of
John Gordon Grant Adam came to Colorado from Scotland leaving her husband in Scotland where he
ran a pub. She had several children. They settled in what is now Arapahoe County, Colorado as
farmers and lived in the vicinity of what is, in 1995, East Sixth Avenue and Moline Street,
Aurora. Later, John Gordon Grant Adam and his wife lived at 680 South Monaco, as did later
generations.

48. He appears to be (LDS) a son of James Haggart and Charlotte Robertson, christened 10 April,
1831 in Kinclaven, Perth, Scotland.
49. Alvarado Cemetery also lists:
"CHARLY HAGGART'S CHILD" 22 March, 1878
HAGGART, CHARLES, 12 August, 1889 *

50. ADA B. HAMILL has (Sep1985) photos and a postcard of two ladies identified as KATE L. SPENCER
and BESSIE M. TILBE. They were cousins of KATE HAGGART HAMILL.
KATE L. SPENCER, from her home in Hannibal, Missouri wrote a postcard to KATE HAGGART HAMILL
31 May, 1909 on which she made casual reference to "Uncle WILL HAGGART"! She also mentioned
"Luzerne's wife and babies".
51. LDS IGI, 1993, lists a Riley Clevenger b. 1833 in Greene County, Ohio.
Also Reilly Clevenger, son of Thomas Clevenger and Mary Brown, b. Warren County, Ohio, 1834.
52. Death certificate lists birth as " Spring Valley".
53. See "Trainor".
54. Due to the sparse population in the time and place, I am inclined to think that Catherine King
may be a daughter of Rev. John King. "Rev. John King, pastor of the Mercersburg Presbyterian
Church from 1768 to 1811, was an able and scholarly minister upon whom Dickinson College
conferred the degree of D.D. in 1792, in which year he was elected Moderator of the General
Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. He was also author of several small publications which
evidence his scholarly propensities." "After Princeton had become firmly established as the
Presbyterian college of the Middle Colonies, the emphasis was chiefly upon preparing students
for that institution. Among these were" )("John King's Classical School at the Conococheague
settlement,"). (From "The Scotch-Irish of Colonial Pennsylvania", Wayland F. Dunaway, 1944,

58. From LDS Ancestral File, 1993:
Jannetje Teunise VAN VETCHEN was spouse of Seger CORNELISSEN of Amsterdam, Holland. He was born
about 1629 and died 20 June, 1660. He was one of six children of Cornelis SEGERSE (b. abt 1599)

Boyer's account book often was the party paying the account rather than the person buried.
60. Buried or reinterred at Riverside Cemetery, Denver, q.v..
61. ARCHIBALD, SR. was buried beside MARY A. It was partly from this placement that I infer
that these are man and wife.
62. Next of kin listed for ARCHIBALD, Jr. was GEORGE ADAM, 1397 Dallas, Aurora.
63. Next of kin listed for WILLIAM A. was Wm. T. Webb, 1467 So Logan St.
64. Next of kin listed for FLORENCE B. and WILLIAM A. (second) was GEORGE C. ADAM, 9640 E 13th
Ave, Aurora, Colorado, 80010.
65. Next to FLORENCE B. is a memorial marker for MARGARET SCHOLLAY who died in Elgin, Scotland,
28 October, 1913. I wonder if she was the mother of MARY A.?
66 . This date, from the outer cover, was apparently added by Barney at a later date as it
conflicts with the date entered by Pat at his writing
